I have struggled with anorexia for a large portion of my life and I've noticed that the way people treat my disease is greatly influenced by my gender. My body is often blatantly objectified. People call me things like "Beanpole" and "Twig" and make comments like, "You need to get some meat on your bones." Others see me shirtless for the first time and loudly point out that I'm "skinny" (as if I didn't know). I get frustrated because these comments are widely seen as socially acceptable. Meanwhile, I see the general public offer more sensitivity to other body types. People know not to say those things to a women with a physique similar to mine and they also know not to call someone fat immediately upon seeing their body for the first time. Why am I not given the same courtesy? This project was designed to raise awareness of male anorexia and how to engage with it. If you take anything away from this, let it be this: Anorexia is not exclusive to women so please don't exclude men from the conversation. Objectification of any body type is wrong, so please think before you comment.
